The Con

As embarrassing as this will appear, I have decided to come out and talk about it… the things I do just to keep you entertained.

October Madness was conned out some money. I was a conned by a white collar con man. He approached me with a story that today seems too good to be true but at the time seemed like such a blessing.

He was good. He walked up and stood next to me looking extremely presentable. He was looking like an ordinary gentleman he also seemed to have forgotten his “con man” name tag at home because absolutely nothing about his appearance was selling him out.

The con begins when he allows me to hear the last part of his telephone conversation where he is finalising a “deal “to “someone” on the other end of the line. Then he curses because his battery has gone dead (and there was no electricity in Masvingo at the time). He then strikes a conversation with me and I allow him to do so. He tells me about his work and his Christian life. He sure seemed to have me figured out, mentioning Church to me the Christian. He starts complaining about the electricity situation and how it may mess up his deal because he hadn’t finalized arrangements with the person at the other end of the line when his battery had gone flat.He them proceeds to give me details of this deal. I listened….

Listen, his story was good; he had done his homework because he had an intelligent answer for every question I asked. He says “Listen if you have some extra cash I could rope you in, its last minute but I am sure my associate will be agreeable”. He sees that the expression on my face is not forthcoming, he says “I know it’s not easy to part with money so let me give you time to think about it, give me your number and I will call you. OHHH I can’t do that, my battery is dead, let me come by your work place later and we will continue this discussion”. Two hours later he comes to the office and I hand the money over to this stranger. Today I will forgive you for judging my actions I myself can’t even believe I did it, we exchanged contact details and he left.

I get home that evening and all of a sudden my senses were restored, all of a sudden nothing about what had transpired made any sense. I started panicking; I tried to call his number and what would you know THE NUMBER DOESN’T EXIST.

To laugh, to cry…

I thought of calling the Mr but thought NO, this is not the time for a lecture…
Thought of calling Didi but thought NO, he is just going to laugh at me
Thought of calling the Oracle and just laughed at the thought, she would kick me

Finally I called Electra and she said all the right things. She said let’s wait until tomorrow and we will try his email. If it does work out that it was a con, you have to be grateful that you learnt this lesson early in life where the amounts involved are still small. Better now than later when the amounts involved could be thousands of dollars.

So I waited until the next day and sent the email, it bounced back. It was a con. A great one if it managed to get me. It was a company email so I called the company and inquired whether they had a man by that name working there, they didn’t….

I must say I was a bit dizzy for about a minute or two.

1.       I wanted to pray for this man’s punishment,
2.       I wanted to pray that I meet him one day begging on the side of the road

3.       I wanted to pray that God help him reform and become a better person, that he could be like the biblical tax collector who went back and repaid all the people he had cheated.

Eventually I just prayed that God’s will be done in my finances and in this evil man’s life.

I wonder how many other people he has conned;it’s probably his career, stealing money by intelligent means.

The moral of the story is – if it can happen to me, it truly can happen to anyone. Be careful
