The Pastor and the Athiest
The case of the pastor who did not believe
in his God and the atheist who believed in the God of the pastor
The story goes there was an atheist
businessman who built a night club next to a church. The pastor of the church
was livid about the businessman’s actions as he felt the new establishment
would mislead his parish. He was so angry he launched an extensive campaign to drive the business man and his business away from the church. The campaign
involved prayer sessions, fasting and preaching dedicated to removing the night
club from the proximity of the church.
Lo and behold after a month of operations
the night club was burnt in a fire caused by an electrical fault. The Church celebrated, testimonies were made
that it was the hand of God which had brought down the night club. The Church’s
prayers had been answered.
Here is where the plot thickens…
The businessman took the matter to court
and sued the church for the damages to his property.
The pastor’s argument: the night club had
been destroyed by a fire and that had nothing to do with the church.
The businessman’s argument: if the church
believed that God had heard their prayers, then it was their prayers that had
caused the fire and hence they were liable for the damages. In denying
responsibility for the damages, the Church was expressing that it is not their
prayers which had caused the fire and therefore not their God who had answered
their prayers.
