Distance my ... oops
People in long distance relationships tend
to over emphasis the effects of distance on their relationships. Blaming
boredom, infidelity and break ups on a number of kilometers.
My question is how can you blame distance
for the demise of relationships in this day and age where you have all sorts of communication tools at
your disposal. The internet has successfully reduced the distance between any
given points in the world. Facebook, Skype, Whatsapp, Nimbuzz, email you name it.
Back
in the day when my parents were dating they were reliant on the postal system
(snail mail) and telephones. Telephones not
cellphones and as such one could not just pick up the phone and dial when they
missed their significant other. Communication tools were far and few in
between.
My father was at the University
of Zimbabwe in Harare while my mother was St Theresa school of nursing in
Masvingo. A distance of about 250km. Their terms seldom ever coincided and
hence visits were restricted. But I look at them today, 30 years and 4 children
later, and I see a kind of friendship and love that inspires me everyday.
I reckon the microwave lifestyle has
infringed into relationships as well, people don’t want hard, its just too
hard. Fast and easy is the way to go. The minute a situation looks like it requires work and effort we
bolt and look for an easier alternative.
Maybe we are not as faithful, patient as hopeful
as their generation
I am just thinking out loud…
