The link between Homosexuality, TV and You...

What have I been watching lately?
1.       Being Mary Jane
2.       Scandal
3.       How to Get away with murder
4.       And Modern family

Cyrus from Scandal

Am I enjoying these TV Shows? Absolutely so, every single one of them. But what has recently caught my attention more than the great acting and intriguing plots is the unignorably strong presence of gay male characters in each and every one of these shows.

Someone out there decided that if placards and demonstrations won’t work in making the entire world pro-gay, then the will slowly but surely infuse an acceptance of gays and lesbians into our beings through our eyes. And to some extent I think it is working very well for them. I mean, we have Cyrus Beene (Scandal), the man who runs the President of United States of America, a powerful ruthless gay man who also takes time to drink wine and cuddle with Olivia Pope. Cam and Michelle (Modern Family), two quirky gay dads just trying to get by. All these are very lovable characters that form pivotal parts of their respective shows.  Ordinary TV characters playing seemingly innocent roles EXCEPT that they are bringing their gay lives into our lives through TV. I mean, if you are a homophobe but you have accepted a gay TV character and maybe even enjoyed their role, have you not inadvertently set yourself on the path of gay acceptance??

Is there anything particularly wrong with the use of TV shows to increase awareness and/or acceptance of matters? Not particularly although the fact that the orientation is rather subliminal may be perceived as somewhat treacherous.

A number of angry black writers have decided that all these gay black actors are part of a bigger scheme to emasculate black men and consequently weaken the entire black race. (Google - The Attack On Black Masculinity for more) A bit of an overreaction, I’d say, seeing as though there are just as many white gay characters as there are black gay characters, if not more.

Don’t be mistaken, I am not anti or pro-gay. You see I live in a country where homosexuality is illegal and so my encounters with homosexuals are largely assumed, assumed in the sense that I assume that people are homosexuals based on stereotypical characteristics. I have never known anyone in my life to be openly homosexual. Therefore, due to the lack of factual interactions with homosexuals my position on homosexuality is that I will only truly know how I feel about homosexuals when I discover that a close friend or relation is a homosexual. I have decided that when homosexuality is in my face like that I will know how I feel about it. Until then, you do you and I’ll do me…
