No more free to air channels, now what????
Do I watch that much TV
Now that the SABC has decided to make its channels
inaccessible on free to air, I find myself a tad bit stuck. First of all let me
state that I am not much of a television viewer, quite frankly there are times
when switching on my TV is an act of faith because I have no assurance that it
still works. 8/10 of the times that it is switched on is simply because I don’t
want to hear the sound of silence while I do something else (such as read,
write or talk on the phone or have my meals).
With that background, these are my options…
1.
I could watch our local television station –
ZTV. But in all fairness and honestly is not the most attractive option because
of the broadcasting quality and lack of options; it is after all just one state
owned television station. On the other hand, it is free save for the TV license
which I would have to pay anyway.
2.
I could ignore TV altogether and only keep my
Television because society regards it as a household essential, right up there
with bed and stove. What would I do for entertainment? Probably use my laptop
and purchase pirated movies and series which cost $1 each, excluding the cost
of moral decay since these pirated DVDs are illegal.
3.
I could purchase the same illegal pirated movies
and series and enjoy them from my Television with the help of my DVD player.
4.
I could purchase a DSTV decoder and enjoy better
programming and more options. Very attractive option but it has me asking
myself if I honestly watch that much TV. Is DSTV necessary considering my TV
viewing habits? Does my current TV viewing warrant a monthly subscription which
will be equivalent to my monthly electricity bill or better yet a pair of shoes?
Worst case would be me watching more TV to ensure that I get my monies worth.
Until a decision is made, I will
stick to the sound of silence…
I am quite sure I am not the only one in such a situation, many other Zimbabweans are scratching their heads, especially the soapie lovers; no more Generations, no more Isidingo, no more Muvhango...
Its a hit and miss because I am also sure DSTV is going to be cashing in on this "National Disaster".
